Up Hard, Down Easy
Description
The "Up Hard, Down Easy" drill focuses on enhancing both your climbing and downclimbing technique while also building your endurance. By using two different routes for the ascent and descent, you're able to hone various aspects of your climbing skills, such as balance, control, and awareness.
Instructions
Start with the Harder Route : Begin by climbing the route that is 2 grades below your skill level. Reach the Top : Once you’ve ascended to the top, prepare to downclimb. Downclimb the Easier Route : Descend using the route that is 3 grades below your skill level. Repeat: Complete this up-down cycle 2-3 times without a break for a comprehensive workout.
Notes & Tips
The contrast between the harder ascent and easier descent allows you to focus on different techniques, making the drill versatile and challenging. As always, prioritize safety and communication, especially if you’re rope climbing. Take your time and focus on your form for both the ascent and the descent to get the most out of this drill. At the top of the wall, you can use another route holds to traverse to the easier route for your downclimb
