Project and Pump
Description
The "Project and Pump" drill is designed to build your project-climbing skills and endurance in a single session. During this workout, you'll alternate between your project climb and easier routes, testing both your limits and stamina. You may be wondering why this drill isn't in the Technique & Skills Drills section since projecting is such an important skill in climbing. However, 102 the pump side of this drill focuses more on endurance than it does on projecting. Whether or not you get better at projecting, you will build your endurance.
Instructions
Project Phase : Spend 15 minutes on your project climb. You may take multiple attempts within these 15 minutes. Pump Phase : Immediately after the project phase, spend another 15 minutes climbing as many routes as possible that are 3 grades below your project grade. Repeat : Go back to your project climb and repeat the cycle. Do this 2-3 times in total. The only rest you’ll get is between attempts on your project during the 15-minute project phase.
Notes & Tips
To make this drill more challenging, consider selecting a more difficult grade for the routes you climb during the “Pump Phase.” Always prioritize safety, especially if you’re using ropes. Make sure your belayer is aware that you’ll be going through this drill.
