One Foot Smears
Description
The "One Foot Smears" drill is designed to improve your ability to maintain balance and position when you're limited to using only one foot on a hold. This exercise will help refine your techniques, such as smearing and flagging, which are essential for advanced climbing scenarios.
Instructions
Initial Positioning : Start your climb but make sure to use only one foot on a hold at a time while the other foot will be smearing on the wall throughout this drill. Smearing Technique : Use smearing to maintain balance when you’re limited to one foot. Smearing involves using the rubber on the bottom of your climbing shoe to gain friction on the wall. Flagging for Balance : Incorporate flagging with the foot that is smearing to distribute your weight and maintain balance. This involves extending one leg out to the side or behind you, touching the wall to counterbalance your weight. Maintain One-Foot Contact : Continue climbing, making sure only one foot is on a hold at any given moment.
Notes & Tips
Practice smearing and flagging techniques to keep your balance during the exercise. You may find it more difficult on overhangs or routes with fewer foot options, but that’s part of the challenge.
